Upon assuming office during the COVID-19 pandemic, the Biden administration has come under scrutiny from former Vice President Mike Pence, who is vying for the GOP presidential nomination. Pence criticized the administration for not effectively utilizing the resources left by the previous administration to combat the virus.

In an interview with Newsmax today, Pence remarked, “It’s remarkable to think that that the Biden administration, in their first year of COVID, tragically lost more Americans to the COVID pandemic, [even] with all of the tools that we left behind, than we lost in a year when we began with no tools whatsoever.”

Instead, under President Joe Biden, “they defaulted into vaccine mandates, and they dropped the ball on testing,” said Pence. “They dropped the ball on therapeutics, so there’s a lot of lessons to be learned. But I took the team that I was handed and I believe we worked hard out to save lives all year long, and I believe we did.”

When asked if he would have dismissed or limited the role of Dr. Anthony Fauci during the pandemic, Pence pointed out that by the time he was appointed to lead the White House Coronavirus Task Force in February 2020, President Donald Trump had already included Fauci in the task force several months earlier. Pence explained his strategic choice in adding individuals like Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and Chief Economic Adviser Larry Kudlow to the task force, with the aim of safeguarding the economy.

However, Pence noted a shift in Fauci’s stance over time, describing him as increasingly supportive of the authoritarian measures implemented by Democratic governors. He also observed changes in Fauci’s approach following Joe Biden’s campaign promise to place him in a prominent role, stating, “Especially after Joe Biden, as a candidate, said he was essentially going to put Dr. Fauci in charge, it seemed like things changed with him dramatically.”
