Russia wants to reach a negotiated solution to end its war on Ukraine, according to former German chancellor Gerhard Schroeder. The ex-leader, who is a personal friend of Vladimir Putin, said last month’s agreement on allowing grain shipments to leave Ukraine might pave the way to a broader peace arrangement. “The good news is that the Kremlin wants a negotiated solution,” Schroeder told German media on Wednesday, adding that he had met Putin in Moscow last week. “A first success is the grain deal, perhaps that can be slowly expanded to a ceasefire.”

Schroeder, who was chancellor from 1998 to 2005, has been heavily criticized for his close ties to Russia, including taking jobs with Russian state-owned energy company Rosneft. Read more.

  1. A fair negotiated settlement? Sure, why not.
    As long as it includes:
    1) Russia retreating from every square inch of Ukraine.
    2) …and returning Crimea
    3) Reparations paid to the Ukrainanian government and citizens for property damaged, destroyed and stolen.
    4) …as well as for soldier and civilian lives lost.
    5) Russian soldiers who committed war crimes prosecuted at The Hague.
    6) …Putin, too.
    7) Ukraine being free to join NATO, or not, as they wish.

No, it’ll never happen. But it should.

    • If Putin wants to end the war, he just calls back home however number of troops he still has. So simple! Ukraine was attacked: end the offensive!
      Brilliant strategy; No?

    • You do know that the Azovs were attacking Russian nationals in Eastern Ukraine for years and that those parts voted to join Russia, right? This is not something we should be taking sides in.

    • Not worth the try if Ukrainians still have chemical weapons. Good comes before Shalom. If Russia “wants to negotiate to end the war” it’s a sign the end of cleansing is near.

  2. A Ukrainian man dancing with joy on Wednesday while carrying a sign saying that read, “The End is Upon us! The End is Near!” elicited some stunned reactions of disbelief from Ukrainian bystanders who couldn’t believe their eyes.
“What’s wrong with this fellow?!” asked one Ukrainian bystander. “Has he lost him mind to the ravages of war?!”
However, the stunned reactions of the crowd quickly turned into chuckles and smiles when the sign carrier put down his sign, and picked up another sign that said, “Russia Wants to Negotiate to End War! Rejoice, my friends! The End is Near!”
