Recent reports suggest that the Hamas terrorist organization is obstructing the evacuation of civilians from northern Gaza, killing innocent Palestinians attempting to flee and hindering American citizens from using the Rafah border crossing to reach safety in Egypt.

Israel Defense Forces (IDF) spokesman Jonathan Conricus has been cautioning for several days that Hamas is preventing the departure of civilians from Gaza in anticipation of an imminent ground war. He referred to both Israeli and international sources during an interview on CNN, underscoring the severity of the situation.

Conricus elaborated on this matter during a Twitter Q&A session on Sunday, alleging that Hamas carried out an attack on a convoy of Palestinian civilians attempting to escape, resulting in the tragic death of 70 individuals, most of them children. This strike occurred on a route designated by Israel as safe for Gazans seeking refuge. An additional 200 people sustained injuries as a result of this incident, prompting Conricus to announce that the IDF anticipates providing evidence supporting their claim in the near future.

During an interview on State of the Union with Jake Tapper, National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan revealed that while Egypt and Israel were cooperating to facilitate the evacuation of American citizens from Gaza, Hamas was actively obstructing these efforts. He stated:

“The Egyptians have, in fact, agreed to allow Americans to depart, to get safe passage through the Rafah Crossing. The Israelis agreed to ensure that the area around there would be safe, at least as far as they were able to do so. The question when we tried to move a group yesterday was actually Hamas taking steps to try and stop that from happening. But we are continuing to work this around the clock. And we are doing all that we can to make sure that American citizens who are in Gaza can get through that border crossing.”

The Fourth Geneva Convention mandates that foreign civilians seeking to leave a conflict zone must be granted the opportunity to do so, or they should be allowed to present their case to an appropriate tribunal. Hamas is thus in violation of international law through its actions.
