MKs Moshe Gafni and Uri Maklev triggered the ire of dog enthusiasts by submitting a bill that calls for a massive increase in annual dog-license fees from $15 to $1,050. This was in response to Finance Minister Avigdor Lieberman’s disguising his anti-chareidi taxing of disposable plastic utensils as an environmental measure.

The UTJ lawmakers argued that dogs also damage the environment by eating copious amounts of processed meat and requiring plastic bags to dispose of their droppings.

After Minister Gideon Kara, who chairs the Knesset Legislative Committee, refused to discuss the bill and Netanyahu demanded its recall, Gafni said the dog bill was never meant to be taken seriously.

“People must think we’ve gone crazy,” Gafni said. “This is exactly our point. When Lieberman put a tax on disposables, he justified it out of concern for the planet and the environment, to prevent air pollution. He did not say that his goal was to harm the chareidi public and large families.”

“So our proposal comes to show the absurdity,” Gafni added. “If you care about environmental pollution, dogs also pollute the environment, and their owners must pay a fee to reduce this pollution. What’s so difficult to understand?”

  1. maybe some people in Israel should start picking up their dogs droppings after themselves and not just leave it on the ground

  2. “Gafni said the dog bill was never meant to be taken seriously.” Why not? Why are you afraid to say the truth? Give it to them like they deserve.
