SCOTUS Strikes Down Key Section of Voting Rights Act

voting-voteIn a decision that will have major repercussions for future elections, the Supreme Court struck down Section 4 of the Voting Rights Act, which mandated which regions with a history of racial discrimination had to get federal approval for changes in election law.

The court didn’t rule out the practice of requiring special oversight for certain jurisdictions, but it did say that the current map is outdated and that it’s up to Congress to decide on a new one. Obviously, any attempt to legislate a new map would be incredibly contentious. The President said he was “deeply disappointed.” Read more at The Daily Beast.
