Thousands Report Ringing In Ears After Receiving COVID Vaccine

There have been reports from thousands of individuals claiming to have developed tinnitus, a ringing sensation in the ears, after receiving the Covid vaccine, NBC reports. While there is currently no conclusive evidence linking the vaccines to tinnitus, researchers have started exploring potential connections and theories.

Dr. Shaowen Bao, an associate professor at the University of Arizona College of Medicine, specializes in the study of tinnitus and believes that ongoing inflammation, particularly in the brain or spinal cord, may play a role in the development of the condition. Bao, who has suffered from tinnitus himself for many years and serves as a representative on the American Tinnitus Association’s scientific advisory board, became interested in investigating the possible link after encountering a Facebook group of people who experienced tinnitus after receiving the Covid vaccine. He conducted a survey involving 398 participants from the group, most of whom reported severe cases of tinnitus. Some individuals even mentioned being unable to hear their car radios over the noise in their heads while driving. Alongside ringing in the ears, participants also reported various other symptoms such as headaches, dizziness, vertigo, ear pain, anxiety, and depression. Interestingly, more people reported developing tinnitus after the first dose of the vaccine compared to the second, suggesting a potential interaction between pre-existing risk factors for tinnitus and the vaccine. Bao is currently analyzing the results of his survey and has not yet published any preliminary findings.

As of now, at least 16,183 individuals have filed complaints with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reporting the development of tinnitus after receiving the Covid vaccine. However, after conducting internal reviews of these reports, the CDC has stated that it found no data suggesting a link between the vaccines and tinnitus. The agency has not made these reviews public, which has raised concerns among experts like Dr. Gregory Poland, a leading vaccine expert from the Mayo Clinic. Poland, who himself developed tinnitus after receiving the Covid vaccine, questions why the CDC has not conducted and published comprehensive research on the matter. He feels that the CDC appears “unconcerned” about the reports of tinnitus and its potential association with the vaccines.

The experience of tinnitus can be debilitating, affecting an individual’s sleep and overall quality of life. Dr. Poland, since sharing his own experience, has received numerous emails from strangers who also believe their tinnitus was triggered by the Covid vaccines. He emphasizes that tinnitus is a persistent condition that one does not simply “get over.”

Researchers at Stanford Medicine Molecular Neurotology Laboratory are conducting studies to understand the underlying mechanisms of tinnitus and identify potential biomarkers that could indicate a higher risk of developing the condition after vaccination. Dr. Konstantina Stankovic, leading the research, explains that many forms of tinnitus may result from damage to the inner ear, leading the brain to compensate by generating its own sounds.
