Toyota Motor Co. has announced a recall affecting 1 million vehicles due to a potential defect that could lead to airbags failing to deploy, thus heightening the risk of injuries. The recall encompasses a variety of Toyota and Lexus models produced between 2020 and 2022. Among the affected vehicles are Toyota Avalons, Camrys, Highlanders, RAV4s, Siennas, and Corollas, including hybrid versions. The Lexus models involved in the recall include the ES250 sedan and the RX350 SUV, among others.

The recall focuses on vehicles equipped with sensors in the front passenger seat, which may have been manufactured with defects. These sensors have the potential to experience a short circuit, leading to a malfunction in the airbag system. As a result, the system may fail to accurately determine the occupant’s weight, posing a risk of non-deployment in specific types of collisions.

To address this issue, Toyota and Lexus dealers will conduct inspections on the Occupant Classification System (OCS) sensors and replace them if necessary, with no cost incurred by the vehicle owners. Notifications to affected customers are expected to be sent out by Toyota by mid-February 2024, providing details on the recall.

For Toyota owners concerned about their vehicles’ inclusion in the recall, information can be obtained by calling 1-800-331-4331. Lexus vehicle owners seeking more details can contact 1-800-255-3987 for additional information.
