The US government released a statement today confirming the demise of Marwan Issa, the deputy commander of Hamas’s military division, in a recent airstrike.
Jake Sullivan, the US National Security Adviser, informed the press that in the wake of Issa’s death, “the remaining top leaders have gone into hiding, likely within the intricate network of Hamas tunnels, but justice will inevitably catch up with them as well. We are actively involved in ensuring that outcome.”
A week prior, Israeli Defense Force (IDF) aircraft targeted the Nuseirat camp in Gaza after receiving precise intelligence regarding Issa’s location.
While the IDF has not officially acknowledged Issa’s demise, IDF Chief of Staff Herzi Halevi suggested last night that Hamas is exerting significant efforts to conceal the fate of leaders like Issa.
Lebanese media reports indicate that Hamas has verified Issa’s death. The militant group is purportedly concerned that Israel may attempt to access the site of his demise first to retrieve his body, potentially using it as a bargaining tool.
