The United States carried out airstrikes against Iran’s Larak Island on Sunday, marking the first American offensive against the country in weeks as Tehran threatened retaliation.
The attack was launched after Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps was allegedly preparing to deploy a new wave of underwater mines in the Strait of Hormuz, according to Axios.
The strategically important waterway has remained a major focus of tensions between Washington and Tehran, with the latest U.S. operation targeting Iranian activity on Larak Island near the strait.
The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps acknowledged that the American strike had taken place and said several people were killed and wounded in the attack.
The IRGC did not immediately disclose additional information about the casualties or provide further details about the extent of the damage caused by the U.S. strikes.
