Virginia took down Richmond’s Robert E. Lee statue on Wednesday, days after the state’s Supreme Court paved the way for its removal.

It’s the latest Confederate monument to come down following the racial justice protests that erupted after the murder of George Floyd last year. It comes two months after a Lee statue was removed in Charlottesville.

The 131-year-old statue is the state’s “largest monument to the Confederate insurrection,” Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam said in a statement Monday. “This is an important step in showing who we are and what we value as a commonwealth. ”

The Democratic governor said in June 2020 that he planned to have the statue taken down, but two lawsuits emerged — from five area residents and an heir to the family that initially granted the land for the monument — temporarily blocking its removal.

  1. I agree. The privileged white racist male Ralph Northam, who was caught with black face and the corrupt DNC controlled media circled the wagons for him because he has the almighty D before his name, has now brought closure to the poor downtrodden Floyd family. Now their hero role model, George, can rest in peace knowing that an evil statue was finally removed. Power to the people. It is well documented that poor George was always pained by the fact that there was still somewhere in Virginia a statue that was hurtful to blacks of 150 years ago. It always bothered him so and that is why he pointed a loaded gun at his black girlfriend. Now we have racial justice. President Biden is correct. White supremacy is the greatest threat facing this Nation.

  2. All the Frum kids in Baltimore grew up playing at Robert E. Lee Park. No one thought about the name. It was simply a beautiful park close to the Frum neighborhood. Will anything change now that the statue is gone?
