JTA reports that Michelle Farber and other women have, for the past 7 1/2 years, studied a page of Gemara a day with a small group of women at her home in the Tel Aviv suburb of Raanana. Some 250 more listen to the class online.

On January  5, Farber – who uses the title “rabbanit” – is holding the first large-scale Daf Yomi Siyum Hashas for women at the Binyanei Ha’Uma convention center in Yerushalayim.

Women generally do not study Gemara.

Gedolei Torah have not supported the study of Gemara by women.

But Farber – a Long Island, New York, native – and other rogue women are doing their own thing, a project of Hadran, an organization founded by Farber ostensibly to “encourage women’s Talmud study,” JTA reports.

Some look at this effort as nothing more than a feminist push. JTA reports: “One of Farber’s regular students via podcast, Ilana Kurshan, said she appreciates that Farber uses women’s names when discussing hypothetical legal cases.”

  1. There are many women that learn on a high level privately, & celebrate their accomplishments (not sure this group fits the criteria)

  2. My poor niece belongs to a MO community she is a very good girl but does not have a Gemarakup nor needs one
In school she was driven crazy to devolve a cheishil for Gemara when she didn’t she was deemed a failure and ill suited for their system
Suffice it to say they turned a girls HS years into Gehinom for “the cause”
We can only hope they do teshuva

  3. Thank you, Matzav, for donating valuable advertising to such un-Torah-dik organization.
Most of us would not of known about this OTD group if not for your “NEWS WORTHY” article.
Now, that the “freebie” can not be retracted – damage done – the place will fill with our frum women just out of curiosity. And when a few of those FRUM women will start to do the Daf you will have no one to blame except yourself.

    • the Jewish Observer brought out certain issues over the decades
Although people would criticize them for it
they would be defended by the leading authorities
Because you have are not aware of the societal Trends
that means others are not and are influenced ??

  4. Thank you Michelle Farber for giving frum women a way to use their G-d given brain power in a kosher way, learning Gemara as a way to flex their intellectual muscle in way that attending a shiur “for women only” will never do.
To the closed minded commenters here – would you rather these women, who desire to use the brains Hashem gave them, attend advanced courses in university instead? Or are you just of the “she should stay barefoot and pregnant” variety?

    • Ms. Farber is selling these woman short.
The Gemara in Sotah daf 21a says that the zechus of limud HaTorah does not help a woman in her time of need only the zechus of bringing their boys to cheder .
It`s a shame that she is trying to swindle these ladies for her cause

  5. Don’t pretend to conflate the issue
this event has never happened in all the centuries of our tradition irrespective of what women should do which I could respect Potentially
but an event like this Was never considered acceptable
who are you trying to Kid

  6. I’m just going translate the “headline” into English:
MASSIVE EVENT CELEBRATING 7 1/2 YEARS OF LEARNING TIFLUS!

    Feminism is an Avoda Zara!
They have to realize that although חז״ל say “אם פגע בך מנוול זה משכהו לבית המדרש”, they obviously didn’t have this in mind.

I just want to end off reminding the כופרים of the ברכה that Jews say 3 times a day:

  7. These are frum women who are learning with women. Not advertising for “equal rights.” They are not rogue. Nor are they the women at the Kotel wearing taleisim and yarmulkes. You would be very surprised to hear whiich very respected female Rebbitzens who speak to large frum female crowds, learn gemara. Most of the comments here are uneducated responses that do not take into account the very innovative women who in their time — a hundred or a thousand years ago — were probably teetering on cherem but today are touted as innovators. Women would not be educated formally at all if not for one woman who had respect for the future of Jewish women. And what is wrong with a woman giving examples of a case with womens’ names if the case applies to both men and women? This article is completely skewed and non-informative. Listen to the shiur before making a comment.

  8. By the way, “Rabanit” is just the proper frum way of saying “:Rebbitzen” in Hebrew. Ask Rebbetzin Heller what Israeli women call her.
