A ruined building from the time of the Sanhedrin was discovered in Yavneh during archeological excavations prior to the enlargement of the modern city.

Fragments of chalkstone vessels in the building indicated Jewish ownership, since such vessels were commonly used by Jews due to their immunity to tumah.

“The discovery of finds from the time of the Sanhedrin is very exciting,” said the Israel Antiquities Authority. “This is a direct greeting from the past, from the period when the Jewish leadership salvaged the remnants after the fall of the Beis Hamikdosh, went into exile in Yavneh, and set about reestablishing the Jewish people there.”

The archeologists also discovered a cemetery from the same era. Over 150 glass containers found on its tombstones probably contained fragrant oils.
