Attorney General Merrick Garland revealed today that he “personally approved” requesting the search warrant that triggered Monday’s unprecedented raid on the Florida home of former President Donald Trump and revealed the Justice Department had asked a federal magistrate judge to unseal copies of the warrant — if Trump and his legal team do not object, the NY Post reports.

“The Department filed the motion to make public the warrant and receipt in light of the former president’s public confirmation with the search, the surrounding circumstances, and the substantial public interest in this matter,” Garland told reporters.

“Faithful adherence to the rule of law is the bedrock principle of the Justice Department and of our democracy, upholding the rule of law means applying the law evenly without fear or favor. under my watch, that is precisely what the Justice Department is doing,” he continued.

Garland, who spoke for four minutes and took no questions, confirmed that copies of the search warrant and FBI property receipt were given to Trump’s attorneys on Monday and added that they were “on site during the search.”

  1. Garland says that Trump’s counsel was onsite during the search. I’m not sure who Trump’s counsel is, but I assume it’s Trump attorney, Christina Bobb, who referred to herself as Trump’s counsel, and said in an interview that, “I was [Trump’s] legal representation, his counsel on the ground there [at Mar-A-Lago]. [The FBI agents] kept me out of everything, all the facilities. They say that’s standard protocol. I could not see. I could not observe… Nobody observed it.”
So, apparently, contrary to Garland’s assertion, no one was allowed to observe the raid.
Some interesting background material herehere and here.

  2. The Trump attorneys asserted publicly that they were not permitted to be present during the raid/search. Garland says the opposite. Sadly, the credibility of anyone in the Biden administration is worse than poor. I don’t believe Garland.

  3. When asked on Thursday whether he would heed Mr. Garland’s request to unseal copies of the warrant, the federal magistrate judge told reporters, “I’d definitely do it, if Garland wants me too. The problem is, once I unseal the thing, it’s kind of hard to reseal it correctly. I would have to use crazy glue, which I don’t have in the office now, or scotch tape, but it’s not going to look the same. You’ll be able to tell it was unsealed; so he better make sure he wants me to do this.”
Upon hearing the magistrate judge’s comments, Mr. Garland was heard muttering to himself, “Great, so now I got to go out and get some crazy glue, and skip lunch and aerobics! My worst nightmare!”
