The distressing cries, piercing and fraught with fear, resound amidst the chaotic backdrop of gunfire.

“Help,” echoes the desperate voice repeatedly. “Hostages Alon and Yotam. Help.”

The voice, belonging to Alon Shamriz, one of the Israeli hostages, resonates with urgency, while another voice, likely Yotam Haim, adds to the chilling scene.

In the aftermath, Alon Shamriz, Yotam Haim, and Samar Talalka tragically met their end, mistakenly shot by Israel Defense Forces (IDF) soldiers in a heart-wrenching case of misidentification as they attempted to approach the troops for aid, shirtless and waving a white cloth.

“We are by the stairs, under the stairs. Under the stairs,” Shamriz’s desperate pleas resound. “Please help.”

This haunting recording, unveiled by the Kan public broadcaster on Sunday, was captured by a GoPro camera attached to a canine unit dog from the IDF’s Oketz unit, deployed during a skirmish in Gaza City.

Despite hearing cries for help and the mention of hostages in Hebrew emanating from the building, IDF soldiers, wary of a potential Hamas trap, dismissed these calls as part of an enemy ruse. Even signs left by the hostages were regarded as deceptive tactics.

“Israeli hostages,” Shamriz’s voice interjects amidst the gunfire. “Help. Help.”

Tragically, the dog carrying the camera was killed by Hamas fighters during the altercation, with the camera only recovered days later. By then, the IDF had already fatally shot the three escapees, who were several hundred meters away.

Alon Shamriz, aged 26, was abducted from Kibbutz Kfar Aza on October 7, along with 28-year-old Yotam Haim, while Samar Fouad Talalka, aged 24, was taken from Nir Am. Their desperate cries echoed through the recording as they sought refuge.

“We’re inside the location,” Shamriz implores. “Please help.”

On December 15, mere days after the recording, the trio met their tragic demise in the Gaza City neighborhood of Shejaiya, mistaken for Hamas combatants by IDF troops.

The IDF posited that the three may have escaped or been abandoned by their captors as IDF forces closed in, highlighting that civilian presence in the war-torn region had been sparse for some time.

Avi Shamriz, Alon’s father, approved the release of the audio for publication, as conveyed by a Kan reporter, shedding light on the family’s painful ordeal. However, Alon’s brother, expressing dismay, revealed that the family had not been informed by the IDF about the leaked recordings.

Reflecting on the trauma inflicted by the leaked recording, he lamented the IDF’s actions, accusing them of exacerbating the family’s suffering and exposing them to psychological torment at the hands of Hamas.

Alon Shamriz, Yotam Haim, and Samar Talalka were among the 253 hostages captured by Hamas during the October 7 onslaught on southern Israel, which resulted in numerous casualties and widespread devastation.
