Italy Reports Almost 800 New Virus Deaths, Setting Daily Record

The Italian government announced that almost 800 new deaths were confirmed on Saturday stemming from COVID-19, marking the largest number of fatalities recorded in a single day due to the contagious disease.

Rome said that 793 new coronavirus deaths were confirmed on Saturday, a one-day record that saw the country’s toll shoot up to 4,825 — 38.3 percent of the world’s total.

Italy has been the hardest hit out of all of western Europe, with 53,578 reported cases and at least 4,825 death, surpassing China where the disease is thought to have originated.
