As has previously been reported, a Verizon 5G antenna has been approved by the Lakewood Zoning Board to be built on the roof of the Eleanor Levovitz Senior Residence located at the corner of Clifton Avenue and 6th Street. Prominent local rabbonim, including Rav Yaakov Forchheimer and Rav Mordechai Betzalel Klein, vehemently oppose the antenna, citing credible and alarming safety concerns for the residents of the area.

In a letter to relevant parties, Rav Forchheimer wrote that he was presented with reliable information regarding the real risks of radio frequency emissions which could affect “the health and wellbeing of the residents situated in the area, including many of my own talmidim, as well as numerous talmidei hayeshiva and the community beyond.” Therefore, Rav Forchheimer concluded, “I am hereby of the opinion that, considering the halacha of chamira sakanta mei’issura, all involved parties should ensure that this proposed antenna does not become a reality.”

Rav Forchheimer is also concerned for the well-being of the residents of the Eleanor Levovitz Senior Residence, one of whom reached out to Rebbetzin Forchheimer to assist in this matter.

Rav Mordechai Betzalel Klein, Satmar Dayan of Lakewood, penned a letter warning of the “tremendous risk for myself, my family, and the entire surrounding residential neighborhood.”  He adds that “this advancement by the phone company is absolutely criminal according to Torah law and must be stopped,” and indicates that “if, Heaven forbid, this antenna receives permission to proceed, I am prepared to seek a new and safer locale.”  Rav Klein asks anyone who can to please help influence the “powers involved” to change their decision.

Members of the community reached out to the building’s owners in an attempt to inform them of the potential health and safety issues of the antenna’s radio frequency emissions. Dozens of neighbors signed a petition essentially pleading with them to “put an end to this.”

On April 8th, a member of the community met with the building’s manager, presenting him with extensive documentation about the inherent dangers. The manager reportedly presented all the information to the building’s owners. Documentation was hand-delivered to the owners as well.

On Tuesday, April 27th, the building’s manager reported back to the local community with a phone call, indicating that the owners regret their original decision and claim that they will be working on a resolution.

Community members are anxiously awaiting written confirmation that the antenna will not be installed. Meanwhile, there’s been a warm outpouring of support from the media and concerned individuals in Lakewood and beyond. Neighbors have hired legal representation and have appealed the Zoning Board’s decision so as to properly present their concerns in a legal setting. They plan to launch a massive fundraising campaign to unite all concerned parties while remaining hopeful that a satisfactory response from the building’s owners will bring this matter to a happy ending.

  1. They should contact President Trump, the current POTUS, who installed magnetic 5G in many neighborhoods rather than 5G with radiation.

  2. Oh, please.
Is this the same people who are also rabid anti-vaxxers and at the same time endorsed Covid-panic closures?

Cellphone antennas are the subject of just as much biased debate as vaccines, with opposers refusing to accept the studies showing they’re safe and supporters refusing to hear about concerns raised by other studies. But to make such a hullabaloo about this – please.
