The number of Israelis using public transportation on Shabbos has grown to about 45,000 due to private and municipal initiatives providing transportation on the holy day.
The Be Free Israel advocacy group said that 13 municipalities are operating free Shabbos public transportation projects, with the largest in Tel Aviv-Yafo, and that Nes Tziona in central Israel would begin a Shabbos busing system this weekend.
Paid public transportation is generally illegal in Israel due to the religious status quo.
