Rav Yaakov Herzog, who was born in New York and is now a father of eight in Ramat Shlomo, titles himself the chief rabbi of Saudi Arabia and hopes to fill that position one day in an official capacity.

Saudis welcome him when he arrives in black coat and hat to help Jews in the kingdom, and he says he feels safer there than in Brooklyn.

Although Saudi Arabia has no native Jewish population, over 2,000 Jews work there in oil or technological companies, and hundreds of Jewish soldiers live there on US bases. Some 20 US Jews recently visited Riyadh to meet government ministers and representatives of the royal family.
