Two Israeli soldiers were shot and wounded in a drive-by terror attack in the West Bank town of Huwara on Shabbos, Israel’s army confirmed, making it the third shooting attack in the Palestinian locale in the past month.

The two victims, reportedly in their 20s, were evacuated to the Rabin Medical Center. One was in serious condition while the other was in moderate condition; yet, both were stable.

Israeli forces were in pursuit of the suspect, searching the area and blocking routes, including the entrances to nearby Nablus. The Abu Ali Matzafa Brigades, the military arm of the Popular Front, initially claimed responsibility for the attack.

After the attack, Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant held a situation assessment with Israel’s army Chief of Staff General Herzi Halevi, the head of the Shin Bet internal security service, Ronen Bar, and other senior officials in the defense establishment.

“I call to pray for the safety of the wounded and ask to convene the cabinet immediately upon the Prime Minister’s return to Israel and make decisions,” Israel’s National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir said in a statement following the attack. “[Israeli] soldiers and Israeli settlers travel on terror-stricken roads, especially in Huwara, and it is time to put order in the village, to place permanent barriers, to close the shops that pose a security risk, and to control order – the writing is on the wall.”

According to Palestinian reports, Israeli forces entered the town of Beita, east of Huwara, shortly after the attack, where clashes broke out.

Hazem Qassem, spokesman for Gaza’s Hamas terror group, welcomed the attack: “For the third time in a month, the resistance strikes the occupation army in the same place in the town of Huwara, to confirm the inability of the occupation and all its military and security system to confront the resistance youth in the West Bank.”

This was the third terror attack in Huwara within a month. At the beginning of March, brothers Hallel and Yagel Yaniv were murdered. Earlier this week, an Israeli man was shot and wounded while driving through the town with his family.

The attack also came amid heightened tensions surrounding the beginning of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, which began on Wednesday. –i24 News
