Al-Sharq, a Saudi channel, disclosed today that Israel is open to the idea of releasing murderer Marwan Barghouti, a prominent leader of the Fatah movement, under the condition that he be transferred to Gaza rather than Judea and Samaria.
Sources suggest that Hamas is likely to make a formal request for Barghouti’s release as part of the initial phase of negotiations.
A political insider from Israel stated today that no Israeli delegation will proceed to Cairo until Hamas provides a response. The source emphasized the need to gauge Hamas’ flexibility before committing to any agreements. Moreover, an Egyptian news outlet revealed on Saturday that Hamas has abandoned its demand for mediator guarantees regarding a permanent ceasefire in the initial stage of negotiations in Gaza.
According to the ceasefire plan presented to Hamas by Egyptian intermediaries, the first phase, spanning 40 days, will involve the release of 33 detainees falling under categories such as women, youth under 19, adults over 50, the sick, and the injured. In exchange, Israel will release 20 militants for each detainee released, adhering to corresponding categories – women for women, adults for adults.
Hamas was also presented with a proposition stipulating that for every female soldier released, 20 militants serving life sentences and an additional 20 with less than ten years left on their sentences would be freed. The pace of releases in this segment of the agreement would amount to three detainees every three days.
Furthermore, reports indicated that in the ceasefire proposal to Israel, Israel would retain veto power over 200 names of militants whom Hamas intends to request release for. During the initial phase, Israel would withdraw from densely populated regions in the Gaza Strip, open up the coastal route for humanitarian aid, and relinquish control over the Netzarim corridor. Additionally, Israel would permit the daily entry of 500 trucks of aid and 50 trucks of fuel to operate Gaza’s power station.
